'No' to a Sainsbury's on Sandygate Road

The Plough is an asset of community value, designated as such by the city council last year and I think everything should be done to protect it, particularly given that a Tesco is opening up on Manchester Road soon, less than half a mile away.

The planning application hasn't been submitted yet, but I want to get as many signatures as possible so I can say to Sainsbury's that the local community doesn't want another supermarket but wants to protect this local community asset.

Please send this link on to other members of the local community so that we can get as many signatures as possible on the petition to show that people really do care about their local community.

Many thanks,

Cllr Adam Hanrahan

Liberal Democrat Councillor for Crookes and Crosspool

I am strongly against the proposal. The development is not appropriate to a residential area, added to which it will create a significant traffic hazard.

I hope Sainsbury’s will get the message and abandon this idea.

With so many local shops on our doorstep already a Sainsbury’s is unnecessary and potentially dangerous to the local businesses, as well as the fact it would be removing a large part of Crosspool’s heritage, particularly in terms of the cricket stadium and football ground who have always had strong links with the Plough.

I would like very much to be invited to the meeting between local residents and Enterprise, the usurers.

I want Parliament to rule the UK, not a bunch of unelected, unaccountable dictators in Brussels.

I write to express my absolute horror at the thought of our local pub, The Plough on Sandygate Road, being turned into a Sainsbury’s Local.

First and foremost it is my local, the only pub within reasonable walking distance. A few years ago it was a thriving and successful business, it is only the greed and lack of imagination of the owners (Enterprise Inns) that has run it into the ground, however with decent management, it could once again be a welcome focal point for the local community.

Secondly, we do not NEED any more local shops, we are well served with an excellent Spar, a Post Office, a newsagent, 2 greengrocers, an independent butcher and sundry other local businesses at Crosspool, plus other shops at Fulwood and Lodge Moor. A Sainsbury’s would threaten the livelihood of these shopkeepers. There is already a Tesco Express due to open on the site of the old petrol station at Crosspool, against vehement local protest.

Thirdly, the traffic both of shoppers and of Sainsbury’s ridiculously large lorries would significantly impact the quality of life for local homeowners and commuters. The Sainsbury’s store at Crookes Road is a constant source of irritation because of the huge delivery lorries blocking the main road, and that is a much larger road than Sandygate Road. When there is any kind of sporting fixture on at the local football ground, there are already significant parking problems.
Please reject this planning application for the Plough.
