Sheffield City Council waste £80,000 on car park cleaning contract

A report published last week (22/09/16) exposed that Sheffield City Council have overpaid for their car park cleaning service by as much as £40,000 per year for the last 2 years.

To add insult to injury, the previous day (21/09/16) the Labour cabinet made the decision to cut Grant Aid funding for a number of local charities including the Young Women’s Housing Project and the Mental Health Action Group.

The report states that this saving can be made by renewing the contract with the existing contractor although “the specification of service will be improved at no further cost.”

This decision has been made as an officer decision, meaning opposition Councillors are unable to call the decision in for further scrutiny to find out how such large savings have been made this year without  impacting on the service, or how Sheffield City Council was overpaying so much before.

Cllr. Shaffaq Mohammed, Leader of the Lib Dems on Sheffield City Council said “Yet again the incompetence of our Labour run Council has meant taxpayer money has been wasted. Whilst Labour continue to cut vital community services, money is been squandered because of poorly negotiated contracts.”

“This decision is not subject to scrutiny, meaning our Labour leadership will not learn and costly mistakes like this will continue to happen."
