£15m in business grants given back to Government by Labour Council

£15m which was given to Sheffield Council to distribute to businesses during last year’s lockdown had to be given back to central Government. Sheffield’s Labour Council failed to give it out on time. On top of this, 1,600 local businesses that applied for the grants were turned away by the council.

Local Lib Dem Leader Shaffaq Mohammed called this “a slap in the face of small and local businesses.”

Shaffaq said, “Businesses have really been bruised over the last year. Many people have sadly lost their jobs or are struggling to get by. Estimates have Sheffield losing around 30% of its retail jobs due to the pandemic.

“It is the city council’s responsibility to ensure Sheffield is fighting fit when restrictions are lifted. £15m being given back to government instead of to businesses is a slap in the face of small and local businesses and we must demand better!

“Labour have proven themselves unfit to lead Sheffield out of the pandemic.”
