A question from Liberal Democrat Councillor Sophie Thornton at a recent Council meeting led to the revelation that the Council has been breaking the law.
“The Council claims to be an excellent landlord whilst admitting it had breached the 2018 Homes Act” says Councillor Thornton, “The homes act is a piece of Government legislation which calls for homes to be ‘fit for human habitation’. For the council to have breached this act even once is inexcusable”
Cllr Thornton's questions also revealed a backlog of well over 5,000 overdue repairs to Council properties.
“This number is simply unacceptable” says Councillor Thornton; “It includes hundreds of repairs described as ‘Fire Safety’, which is very worrying, and the Council needs to work hard to resolve these issues as soon as possible”.
