Lib Dem MEPs will oppose EU - Mercosur trade deal unless Brazil protects the Amazon Rainforest

Liberal Democrat MEPs have today written to the EU Commissioner for Trade, Cecilia Malmstrom, asking her to urgently seek assurances from the Government of Brazil that it will act to honour its environmental commitments to the Amazon Rainforest, as a condition of the ratification of the recently agreed EU - Mercosur trade agreement. The European Parliament will vote on the provisional trade agreement in the coming months.

Liberal Democrat MEPs support free and fair progressive trade deals, but believe the EU's leverage must be deployed in order to convince the President of Brazil to change course now, and end his assault on the Amazon Rainforest.

Shaffaq Mohammed Lib Dem MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber commented:  ‘As someone who has been a passionate environmental campaigner for over two decades, I am appalled to learn that there are currently around 2500 separate fires currently raging within the Amazon Rainforest.

Maintenance of the ecosystem of the Amazon Rainforest is crucial if we are to stop the current climate emergency that we face.

I support my Lib Dem Colleagues in Europe’s call to oppose the proposed trade deal with Brazil if the current practise of burning the rainforest rather than protecting it continues.
